EU maintains good prospects for wheat production in 2022/23 Y - 10.02.2022

Analysts of  Stratégie Grains enlarged their forecast for wheat production in 2022/23 Y by 0.3 million mt from the previous estimate to 128 million mt, mainly due to higher figures for France and Poland. The grain sowing area is estimated at the level of the previous season - 21.7 million hectares.

Experts note that, despite some difficulties during the sowing period, the production forecast is generally favorable. Also in the short term, rainfall is predicted in the central regions of the EU, which is expected to positively affect the development of winter crops. However, rainfall deficits in southeastern Europe and Spain are worrisome, which could lead analysts to revise their production forecast downwards.

It should be noted that the announced forecast is 1.6 million tons lower than the wheat harvest harvested in the EU in 2021/22 Y.

As for other grains, the experts also enlarged the forecast for the gross harvest of barley in the EU in 2022/23 Y to 51.9 (+0.3) million tons due to the expected increase in production in France, and the forecast for the corn harvest to 66.8 (+0.4) mt due to expected yield increases in Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
