Moldova expects sizable growth of grain production - 17.01.2023

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova predicts a higher harvest of grain crops in 2023, after prolonged drought in 2022, the State Secretary of the Ministry Vasyl Sharban said according to NOI.md.

He noted that the increase in grain production would largely be achieved thanks to a significant growth in wheat crop.

"Winter wheat is about 302.5 thsd ha, which we have at the moment. Generally, the total area under grain should increase to 320-330 thsd ha. Thus, if the year is good, the harvest should be 1.3-1.5 mln tonnes of wheat", – V. Sharban explained.

Wheat planted area usually is about 350 thsd ha in Moldova. According to preliminary data of the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova, the grain harvest in 2022 amounted to about 828 thsd tonnes, down 47% y/y.
