Warm weather in early January negatively affected winter crops in Ukraine - 09.01.2023

According to the monitoring by the State Service of Food Safety and Consumer Protection, due to the abnormally warm weather in the first days of 2023, weak plant vegetation was noted everywhere across areas planted with winter grains and rapeseed in Ukraine, which negatively affected the hardening of the crops, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine reported on January 6.

"The plants got into the stressful conditions of heat shock, and during the short daylight, the processes of the root formation began, which, with a sharp decrease in temperature, will negatively affect the plants’ ability to survive, their regeneration, the energy of tillering, the growth of vegetative mass and the formation of yields in the future. Such a phenomenon is dangerous for poorly developed winter crops", – the experts clarified.

It is also noted that, under the above-mentioned weather conditions, the development of powdery mildew, septoriosis, helminthosporiosis and root rot is noted on 2-4% of winter grain plants.

"Across winter rapeseed fields, due to fluctuating temperature and the stock of infection, pathogens of peronosporosis, alternariosis, fomosis, powdery mildew are progressing, which cover 1-6%, max. 11-17% of plants", – the report added.
